A Female Gaze

A Female Gaze
In 2020 Charlotte Wiig set up the artist collective A Female Gaze. It is a group of ten female photographers, dedicated to strengthening the role of women in photography, by showcasing diverse female perspectives. The composition of the artist collective varies from year to year, but it consistently includes female photographers affiliated with Norway and engaged in professional photographic practices, diverse in genre, artistic expression, identity, age, and background.
The group's first exhibition was in 2021, with the eponymous title "A Female Gaze," explored concepts of masculinity, the man, and the feminine perspective. "A Female Gaze" was showcased at Oslo Negativ, Nordic Light Festival of Photography in Kristiansund, Shoot Gallery in Oslo, and Copenhagen Photo Festival.
In 2022, they continued their work with the exhibition "Mother Nature on a Saturday Night," which was displayed at Oslo Negativ and FLOW Photofest in Scotland. The theme explored the idea of nature, as defined in a Norwegian setting, and the implications that has on identity.
"SELF-ish" in 2023 was their third exhibition, which explored self portraits in the age of selfies, and included the use of AI, with showings at Oslo Negativ photo festival, the gallery Hos Arne, and Oslo Metropolitan University.
"Act Naturally" was the theme of the 2024 project, focusing on oxymorons. The first showing of this work took place at the Oslo Negativ photo festival, followed by Asker Kulturhus and Trondhjems Kunstforening.
The 2025 project theme was “Abject - Everything that Flows Between Body and Abyss”. This project was first exhibited at the Oslo Negative photo festival in October of 2025 and will go on to show at both the Trondhjems Kunstforening and the Fredrikstad Kunstforening in 2026.
